Jerry Howland

This is Jerry’s 59th year in the Boston Public Schools, fourteen as a student (K1, K2 and grades 1 to 12) and forty years as a teacher/administrator. He was a classroom teacher and department head for 31 years followed by six years as Headmaster at Another Course to College. For the past three years, he has been teaching World History full time and coaching basketball and mock trial.

For many years, Jerry has been involved in travel study programs for Boston students and he loves the opportunity to change students’ lives forever by exposing them to different parts of the world and different cultures.  In 2008, he co-chaperoned with Bethany Wood a service project for ACC students in Guatemala through Habitat for Humanity, and in February 2010, they organized a cultural exchange program with a high school in Accra, Ghana.  In the past, he chaperoned several other similar trips including a three week trip to Japan for ten BPS students as part of the Boston/Kyoto sister city program; two trips to Canada with students from English High School, one to Saint John and the other to Quebec; a ten day trip to Moscow and Leningrad (now St Petersburg) with 60 students from Boston Latin; and trips to Atlanta, Chicago and Denver with English High School students for the national mock trial championships. Jerry looks forward to doing what he can to help more BPS students have similar experiences.
